The results of Andersen Steinberg’s research into the career path of strategy consultants.

At Andersen Steinberg we understand the career paths of those in the strategy industry.  We understand some start out as strategy consultants, moving into corporate strategy roles and then into operational leadership careers; others decide to go it alone becoming freelance consultants or setting up their own boutique consultancy; some strive for Partnership in a consultancy where they can build something; and others are looking for a move into Private Equity.

With the purpose of better understanding the career paths of strategists we have recently completed a survey and research into the career paths of strategy consultants at and previously at the top strategy consultancies.  The results show that the majority of strategy consultants ceased their consulting careers at Project Leader / Engagement Manager level with 5 years consulting experience and an average of 2 years post-MBA experience.

The career paths after consulting varied while some Managers stayed on to become Principals and Partners at their or other strategy consultancies.  The pie chart below shows the next career step for strategy consultants of Manager level.

The results from our research confirm that the major career paths for strategy consultants are remaining in consulting to climb to Partner level, or to move into a corporate role either in the strategy function or other operational leadership roles.

At Andersen Steinberg we help candidates to make that next transition in their careers.  Please contact one of our team for personalised advice.
