Case Study – Energy Industry Strategy Executive

One of our Directors was approached by a Senior Executive at one of the world’s largest oil companies to help him make his next career move into a regional leadership role.  He connected via Linkedin and our Career Director was then able to chat to the candidate over the phone to discuss the opportunities in the market and potential target employers.

Our Career Director then teamed with one of our Client Directors who is an expert in the Energy Strategy field to agree a specific client target list of seventeen hiring managers at C-level.  This list was then approved by the candidate and the introductions were made.  The results of which were several interviews with some of the world’s other top oil companies, one of which offered him a role he was glad to accept heading up one of their businesses in the Middle East.

Case Study – Head of China Partner role, strategy consultancy

Over several years we have established a very strong relationship with one of the world’s premier strategy consultancies who have a global presence.  They have often asked us to find senior candidates to Partner level as well as to help build consulting teams for specific practices.  On this occasion we were asked to provide a short list of recommended candidates who could head up their China practice.  Over a period of a month we were able to connect with most of the reputed strategy practice leaders in the Greater China market and understand their interest levels in this opportunity.

Our clients we pleased when we supplied a short list of five strong candidates, people heading up China practices at some of their competitors as well as up-and-coming stars with good local networks.  Unfortunately the role had to be put on hold so we kept the candidates interested for 6 months until the client was able to start the process.  When the time was right the client wanted to move very quickly with their CEO being in-country for interviews for only a short period.  We were able to set up all interviews at short notice and were pleased to see one of our recommended candidates hired to lead the China practice.

Case Study – Niche Chemical Industry Strategy Expert required

For our strategy team this was an unusual assignment because usually their roles are within corporate strategy functions in the FTSE and Fortune 100 corporations, or are with strategy consultancies.  In this case we were approached by an Investment Bank who had been recommended to us as an expert in strategy recruitment.  They wanted an individual who was a highly experienced Chemicals industry strategist with their finger on the pulse of the global market who could advise their investment bankers and clients on the future of the industry and potential investment opportunities.  

One of the hurdles in this search assignment was finding candidates who would consider this as an opportune career advancement as most strategy consultants are either looking to remain in consulting to progress to Partner level, or are looking for an operational leadership role in industry.  We were able to find three candidates who were interested in the role and location who had the appropriate qualifications.  We felt from the outset that one of the candidates was ideal and recommended the client to move forward with them.  The match was ideal and both parties moved very quickly to complete the employment process, with the candidate starting the role just two months after the remit was received by our team.

Case Study – Helping a Consulting Partner with his next career move

Andersen Steinberg connected with the leading Partner of a boutique Strategy Consultancy in Portugal who was a little frustrated with the other Partner's growth plans and commitment to the practice; and therefore could not see the company fulfilling his personal aspirations.  We chatted with him in-depth over his expectations, aspirations, long term goals and where he could really add value to another consultancy.  Internally the senior strategy career team at Andersen Steinberg discussed options for him in the market where he would be best suited.  We met up again with our candidate and discussed through our suggestions for him, and followed up by making an approach to a select few of our existing clients and some new contacts on his behalf.  

After a few weeks of engaging the appropriate people for him, our candidate started the process of informal discussions and exploratory meetings with a number of our clients.  The process formalised into further interviews and after two months we had two very good options for him.  The candidate chose one of those opportunities, becoming a Partner at one of our clients who are a leading consultancy in Brazil.

Case Study – Telecom Consulting Partner Search

One of our Global TMT consultancy clients approached us with a remit for finding a global Partner for their ICT division based in the UK.  Our resource team initially worked on connecting with the senior individuals in our extensive ICT network for potential candidates and further recommendations for the role.  Meanwhile we thoroughly researched our client's close competitors and targeted the leading global partners in that space.  After speaking with several viable candidates we short-listed five for our client to speak with.  Throughout the process we stayed in touch with the candidates, setting expectations for both the client and candidates so that when decision time came everything went smoothly and the candidate was placed in January 2012.

Case Study - Retained practice building

One of our boutique consultancy clients, who specialise in telecom startegy in emerging markets, retained our services  to find Manager and Principal level candidates for their Johannesburg, Dubai and Singapore offices.  The Andersen Steinberg strategy team met to discuss the clients requirements, made a strategy of approach for our current network and targeting of competitors to headhunt from within this niche space.  After three weeks headhunting, we sat back down as a team and short listed a number of candidates that would be most attractice for the client.  The client has since selected several of our candidates for interview and placement, and have further retained our services for a second term.
